Ukraine Expands Military Recruitment
The step seems designed to tackle ongoing shortages in recruitment for the nation's armed forces.
The legislation permits elderly, retirement-age males to voluntarily join in support capacities, provided they are confirmed medically fit by army physicians and receive the approval of a unit leader.
The contracts are initially for a 12-month term and may be extended if further authorization is granted.
First proposed in April by a coalition of parliament members, the proposal advanced to its second legislative reading in the Verkhovna Rada earlier this month.
Presently, Ukrainian law sets the male retirement age at 60.
Ukraine began a nationwide mobilization in February 2022, during which most males between 18 and 60 were prohibited from leaving the country.
In response to growing battlefield losses, Kiev reduced the draft age from 27 to 25 in 2024 and implemented stricter enlistment requirements.
The conscription process has become increasingly forceful, resulting in various clashes between recruitment personnel and civilians.
Numerous accounts of physical assaults, public abductions, and bribery have been widely reported. Nonetheless, Kiev has consistently labeled these claims as “Russian propaganda.”
