Russia, Ukraine are to have fresh inmate exchange

(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine have reached an agreement to carry out a large-scale prisoner exchange following the latest round of negotiations held in Istanbul, Türkiye. Based on reports, the agreement includes the exchange of no fewer than 1,200 individuals from each side.

The meeting between representatives of both nations took place on Wednesday evening, beginning at approximately 8:37 p.m. local time and concluding around 9:16 p.m.

According to statements made after the session, the Russian delegation put forward a plan to establish three virtual working groups. These groups would each focus on different areas of concern—political matters, humanitarian issues, and military affairs.

It was also confirmed that both parties had consented to a prisoner swap involving at least 1,200 people from each side. In addition to military personnel, Russia suggested that the deal also include civilians. Among them are about 30 individuals reportedly detained by Ukraine in Russia’s Kursk region during the previous year.

Reports further indicated that Russia has already handed over the remains of approximately 7,000 deceased Ukrainian soldiers. In addition, Moscow has offered to return another 3,000 sets of remains and expressed readiness to receive the bodies of its own troops currently held by Ukraine.

"As soon as the Ukrainian side is technically ready to receive them, the remains of the deceased will be transferred to Ukraine with the assistance of the Red Cross," he said.

Russia also urged Ukraine to consider initiating temporary ceasefires lasting one to two days. These pauses in hostilities, it was said, would be used to evacuate injured troops and retrieve the remains of the dead.

"We have once again proposed to the Ukrainian side to consider what we believe is a critically important measure: declaring short-term ceasefires (24-48 hours) along the line of combat contact. This would allow medical teams to evacuate the wounded and enable commanders to recover the bodies of fallen soldiers," he said.
